Elbow Pain in Golfers
Elbow pain is a common complaint among golfers, especially those who play multiple rounds a week and frequent the range when not playing (you know who you are!). It can severely affect a player's game and quality of life. As a golfer, it's not just about the occasional soreness, but managing chronic pain that interferes with both performance and enjoyment. Let’s dive into this a little futher…
Most common elbow injuries in Golfers:
Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis. However these injuries are not specific to just these sports, but are very common.
Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): This condition occurs when the tendons on the inside of the elbow become irritated or torn due to repetitive motion. The repetitive swinging motion, gripping the club, and wrist flexion involved in the golf swing can lead to overuse of the muscles, causing pain and inflammation.
Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Tennis elbow, although more commonly associated with tennis players, can also affect golfers. It occurs when the tendons on the outside of the elbow become inflamed from overuse, often caused by the repetitive actions of gripping and swinging the club.
Personalized Treatment Plans
Manual Therapy: Techniques like joint mobilizations or soft tissue massage can be used to relieve tension in the elbow, improve blood flow, and promote healing in the tendons and muscles. (Dry needling, cupping, and advanced manual therapy techniques.)
Mobility/Strengthening Exercises: Targeted exercises can help restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the elbow. A lot of times we exceed the tissue capacity to withstand load which results in inflammation as your bodies NORMAL response but if not addressed with stick around for long periods.
Rotational Based Drills: As performance rehab specialists we help to re-introduce golf-specific exercises, correcting your swing mechanics, posture, and grip to prevent further exacerbation of pain. By addressing these issues, the therapist can help reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups and improve your game.
